Gareth Coombs

Umsintsi Consulting (CC) began in 2011 when Dr. Gareth Coombs, a distinguished new graduate in plant science at Rhodes University, branched his interest and expertise into the broadening commercial world of environmental consulting. This led to numerous projects with a diverse range of clients throughout South Africa.

 
Types of jobs completed include:
• basic ecological assessments,
• botanical assessments and plant inventories,
• rehabilitation,
• agricultural assessments of carrying capacity,
• pre-construction search and rescue of protected species,
• veld and vegetation management,
• invasive species control,
• complex biodiversity assessments
• environmental and conservation education.

During this time, Gareth has not limited his focus to environmental consulting alone. He has, in addition to co-authoring numerous academic publications, sole-authored several additional academic publications.  He has written a book,  published by Struik Nature (Penguin Randomhouse South Africa), entitled “Bass Fishing in South Africa” as well as over 60 popular articles for a range of outdoor magazines in South Africa.  These include African Birdlife, Wild Magazine and other publications relating to his personal hobbies of hunting and fishing. 

With a passion for conservation and environmental restoration, Gareth also began an online series on the propagation of indigenous trees with saforestry online, and propagates and sells indigenous trees from his home with the hope of adding as many new trees to the earth as possible. 

Today, Umsintsi Consulting (CC) still operates from the town of Makhanda, formerly Grahamstown, where Gareth Coombs, with his wealth of experience and knowledge, continues to provide quality environmental consulting and management solutions.
